Your writing itself made listening and “hearing” possible. You express yourself with leanness and elegance in a way that makes the unsuspecting reader, like me, feel like you are accompanying me into this nauseating, morally disorienting parallel universe, not merely giving an account of it . . . . from your opening prayer, with its lucid self-awareness and piercing pleas—your humanity has survived, that you have been to this appalling place before us, taken a lantern into its secret chambers, and somehow emerged strong enough, hopeful enough, and certain enough of Something or Someone, to show us your scars and lead us on a tour of the terrifying places you’ve been. That prayer and your straightforward style have the effect of “certifying” you as a deeply human and thoroughly sane guide we can trust to accompany us.
